Theatre
Southwark has a distinguished history in English theatre. In the late 16th and early 17th century Bankside was the heart of London's theatres district and included the theatres, The Swan, The Hope, The Rose and The Globe, made famous by producing plays by such well known names as Shakespeare and Marlowe. In modern times Southwark still has a burgeoning theatre scene including the rebuilt Shakespeare's Globe, the critically acclaimed Menier Chocolate Factory and the Unicorn Theatre for children.
