You can visit the famous Borough Market for all manner of culinary delights or take a stroll down up and coming Bermondsey Street home too many young designers. Markets
Southwark is home to a variety of markets, both well known and smaller hidden gems. Borough Market is one of the most well known and is a gourmet food lovers paradise occupying its present site for 250 years. It operates as a wholesale fruit and vegetable traders markets overnight and on Fridays and Saturdays there are a range of stalls and cuisines for the general public. Bermondsey Antiques Market, is still regarded as London's premier antiques market and operates on Friday mornings, get there early for the best bargains. For a true experience of a London market head to East St market which has been frequented by locals for decades. Peckham also operates a farmers market on Sundays as well as Chourmet Road market specialising in African and Caribbean food.
Centres
The Surrey Quays shopping centre is one of the biggest in London and has over 50 major high street retailers all under one roof. The Oxo Tower is home to 32 designer-maker studios who offer superb contemporary design to suit all tastes and budgets. Hays Galleria housed in a converted wharf has a variety of shops as well as a permanent collection of craft stalls housed in the interior offering everything from jewellery to paintings. The Elephant and Castle shopping centre is now base to Southwark's large Latin American community and has many specialised shops around this as well as high street chains
Streets
Bermondsey Street is home to many up and coming designers as well as established names such as Kurt Geiger and Eley Kisihimoto. The area around Shad Thames was once one of the busiest docks in London receiving cargoes of tea, coffee and spices from all over the world. As well as many restaurants it is now home to a variety of shops many of them specialising in food. Lordship Lane in East Dulwich features a variety of shops including an old fashioned sweet shop, and many delicatessens.
