Shopping

Elephant and Castle shopping centreJust south of Elephant and Castle you find the East Street Market which is a typical example of an English market with stalls selling food, clothes, electrical and household goods. Around Elephant and Castle there is a strong South American community and this is reflected in some of the shops in the centre. Head down to just off Rye Lane in Peckham to the Choumert Road market which consists of around 30 stalls selling African and Caribbean food.

East Street Market

East Street Market is one of London's oldest, largest and busiest markets and is as fondly visited now by local people as it has been for decades. There is a wide variety of goods on offer including fresh fruit, vegetables, clothes, materials, electrical and household goods. The market itself has been officially running since 1880 however there has been a street trading presence since in Walworth since the 16th century and a young Charlie Chaplin used to visit in his youth.

Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre

The brightly painted Elephant and Castle Shopping centre is fast becoming a hub for the local Latin American community. There are now several restaurants, a bookshop, general store and a grocer situated inside the centre as well as the La Bodeguita on the upper floor which also offers salsa.

Outside the centre there is a market with a variety of stalls and shops on the downstairs floor include a Clarks outlet store, Boots and Peacocks. Also housed in the centre is Superbowl - Elephant and Castle.

Peckham Rye

The area around Peckham Rye has a variety of shopping options. Rye Lane itself has a mixture of high street stores such as Argos, H Samuel and Primark mixed with independent stores selling a variety of food and accessories. Just off Rye Lane is the Chourmet Road market which consists of around 30 stalls selling African and Caribbean food.

Established in 2000, outside the Peckham library, every Sunday there is a Farmer's Market. Providing an alternative to supermarkets the produce is mainly organic and includes stall holders such as Flour Power City and Low Wood Farm.
