Peckham and Elephant and Castle
The two areas of Elephant and Castle and Peckham which also include Camberwell and Walworth make up the middle of the borough of Southwark. They cover a large geographical area and are made up of many diverse communities which contribute to a lively and multi-cultural experience.
Elephant and Castle is the site of what will be one of Europe's biggest regeneration projects. The £1.5 billion, 170 acre programme includes the creation of a new pedestrianised town centre, market square, green spaces and thousands of new homes and jobs. However there is still plenty to see at the moment. The area has a strong Latin and South American community and a multitude of shops, restaurants and salsa clubs have sprung up around the Elephant and Castle area to support this. The area is also home to the Ministry of Sound which is still as popular as ever after over 15 years.
Peckham is probably still best known as the home of Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses, but the area has had many successful regeneration and building projects over the last few years. The Peckham Library which opened in 2000 was designed by Alsop and Stormer and won the Stirling Prize for architecture in the same year while the Bellenden Renewal Area which won a Visit London Tourism Award in 2003, is home to street furniture designed by artists such as Antony Gormley and fashion designer Zandra Rhodes.
The area is home to some of the most green space in the Borough, from Burgess Park with it's new tennis centre to historic and atmospheric Nunhead Cemetery and with museum's such as the Imperial War Museum, and the local Cuming Museum, there is plenty to see and do in the area that incorporates, Peckham, Camberwell, Walworth and Elephant and Castle.
