Maritime Rotherhithe
Start at St Mary's Church which is famous for its connections to the Pilgrim Fathers who departed for America onboard the Mayflower from Rotherhithe. In the church you can find a memorial which marks the final resting place of Christopher Jones who was captain of the Mayflower. There are also many other Maritime connections to be found within the church.
Walk over from the church and enjoy a bite to eat at the Mayflower pub. There has been a pub on this site since the 1600's and at the back of the pub there is a lovely outdoor area backing onto the river. The pub is licensed to sell both British and American postage stamps due to its strong historical connections with America.
Walk along Brunel Road until you reach the Russia Dock Woodland and Ecological Park, this park has been created by the infilling of one of the former Surrey Commercial Docks and was originally used for the importing of timber. At the top of nearby Stave Hill you find a relief map cast in bronze of the former docks by Michael Rizzello. At the end of the park you will find of one London's oldest riverside docks - Greenland Dock. The area has now been redeveloped but the majority of the dock is still intact and many activities such as kayaking and wind surfing take place on it, as it is home to Surrey Docks Watersports Centre.
