Education

This teachers guide is aimed at showing you the mixed variety of attractions that Southwark has, which are both fun and educational. Each of the attractions offers educational programmes or activities connected to the national curriculum. The guide is set out to show what programmes are best suited to each key stage level.

GLA schools can apply for free public transport when visiting cultural venues and events within the Greater London Authority area. Your visit must be of an educational nature.

Britain at War Museum

This museum has been specifically designed to tie in with the national curriculum, especially KS2 and KS3.

Brunel Engine House

Brunel Engine House is an unusual and fascinating museum and is appropriate for those studying science geography, history and design & technology. The Museum also runs a QCA 12 programme, which looks at how life changed in the locality in Victorian times.

Cuming Museum

The Cuming Museum offers hands on education sessions for primary schools, using real museum objects to introduce children to a broad range of skills. Sessions link English, history, science, design and technology and citizenship.

The Design Museum, the UK’s largest provider of design education resources, has an education centre which encourages pupils to get involved in Design.

Dulwich Picture Gallery

Dulwich Picture Gallery has an award winning Education Department which communicates the understanding and enjoyment of fine art. Teachers can also choose a session in the gallery or a private viewing.

Golden Hinde

The Golden Hinde is a working ship and learning here is a ‘hands-on’ experience. The ship is equipped with a range of replica ship furniture and artefacts, all of which can be freely handled by pupils and offers a varied educational programme for KS1 - KS3.

HMS Belfast

Illustrated talks and workshops, followed by the chance to explore the seven decks give pupils a better understanding of modern war history. Teachers are given a free teachers pack and worksheets.

Imperial War Museum

This museum seeks to provide for, and to encourage, the study and understanding of the history of modern war and how it affects our lives. It looks at war from World War 1 to the present day through its exhibits of tanks, aircraft, photos, memorobilia and famous paintings.

London Dungeon

The London Dungeon brings to life the most gruesome events of British history. From the tyrannical women of the middle ages to the brutal London murders by Jack the Ripper, their strong educational focus is brought to life with live actors and interactive shows.

Old Operating Theatre and Herb Garret

The Old Operating Theatre is Britain's oldest operating theatre and was used between 1821 and 1862 in the days before anaesthetic and antiseptic surgery. A visit to the museum gives school pupils a profound insight into the past, and which can stimulate a whole range of issues about past and present health regimes.

Pumphouse Educational Museum

The Pumphouse Educational Museum has artefacts from the foreshore of the River Thames dating back from Roman times as well as displays from the 20th century, Britain in the 1950's and the Blitz Room. Foreshore walks, local walks and talks are available.

Tower Bridge Exhibition offers a rare and stimulating learning opportunity for students of all ages. Special tour packs are available for school groups, linking Tower Bridge to different aspects of the National Curriculum. The packs are aimed at Key Stage 2 & 3.
