Tate Modern
The schools programme at the Tate Modern supports and enriches classroom practice and extends knowledge and understanding of Tate’s unique collection of modern art.
There is a newly redesigned Education Centre, an information room and a resource room, which can all be used as educational spaces.
The schools programme ranges from free gallery sessions for pupils, to regular professional development opportunities for teachers.
Free Bookable Gallery Sessions (KS1 - KS5)
Gallery sessions at Tate Modern develop students skills and confidence in looking at art and developing meanings. These session complement Examination courses, aspects of the Art and Design National Curriculum and can also be used for developing visual literacy.
- Introductions — Students gain skills by looking at and discussing modern and contemporary art and are introduced to key ideas relating to the selected themes. Some themes include abstraction, conflict, citzenship, globalisation, etc as well as sculpture and Installation within the gallery.
- Collection Display Workshops – These workshops can support classroom topics or can be a way of building students' subject knowledge. Themes for these workshops include Material Gestures, Poetry and Dream, Idea and Object and States of Flux.
- Working with Sketchbooks — This aims to refresh students' approach to working with sketchbooks.
- Art and Language — The workshops explore how verbal and written responses to art can be expanded to aid the process of interpretation, and supports work on art and literacy.
- Art and Contemporary Citizens - Students consider the local, national and global communities they inhabit and their role within them. It will encourage them to develop cultural, social, political and gender awareness as well as exploring how art can act as an agent of change.
KS5 Special Programme (student days)
The Tates collections are an invaluable learning resource for supporting students at KS5 across AS, A2, GNVQ and AVCE courses. These date specific events are for students visiting individually. These sessions build students familiarity and confidence in using the gallery and provide opportunities to work with artists and other students. Check with the Tate for dates of the study days.
Age 3-5 Nursery Workshops
Children can work with artists to investigate works in the gallery through looking, talking, games and simple making activities. Call 020 7401 5234 to find out more.
Self Directed School Visits
School groups are welcome to visit independently, however all groups must book ahead. A maximum of 120 students from one school may visit at one time.
Education Spaces
The Resource Room holds a range of material to support your gallery visit and classroom practice. These include Books Magazines, Teachers Packs, access to online resources, resource boxes which you can borrow, and advice on all aspects of planning your visit.
This includes the Clore Education Centre and the Clore Education Room together with the Resource Room which is open on the first Saturday of every month and during some school holidays including Wednesday at Half Terms. To make a booking please call 0207 887 8888.
