Imperial War Museum

This museum seeks to provide for, and to encourage, the study and understanding of the history of modern war and how it affects our lives. The exhibition includes tanks, aircraft, photos, membrobilia and famous paintings. It looks at war from World War 1 to the present day. It aims to address comtemporary and historical issues, meeting the needs of the national curriculum. The Imperial War Museum offers a free education service. The maximum group size is 60 and all groups must book in advance. Teachers are advised to have a preliminary visit.

KS1

The Museum provides a place where children can learn about ordinary people’s lives and lifestyles and look at a wide range of sources (such as artefacts, paintings, photographs, documents, sound recordings and film) that show how the past can be represented. Topics at this level include, art gallery talks and rememberence.

KS2

The Museum is particularly good for children following the option “Britain Since 1930”. There is plenty of scope to learn about the impact of the Second World War on ordinary people’s lives and to look at the various social and technological changes that took place throughout the 20th century.

Topics at KS2 level include, art gallery talks, model House Project, Primary school project, The Blitz Experience, Trench Expereince, War time Christmas, and A Bitter Truth

KS3—4

The Museum is a rich and varied resource for a variety of different subject areas at secondary level some include: Art gallery talks, The Bliz Experience, Trench Expereince, Study sessions, D-Day filming for real, Regeneration, and A bitter truth.

AS/A2

The Imperial War museum also caters for those studying at a higher level, some topics may include, Literature and Poetry of the first world war, Art Gallery talks, D-Day filming for real, and Regeneration.

Holocaust Education

The Holocaust Exhibition is a permanent national resource for teachers and students of History, Religious Education, English, PSHE, Music, Art and Citizenship. Topics may change each term. Worksheets are available free of charge and first and second world war packs can be purchased. There are also free teachers evenings.
