HMS Belfast
Groups should allow 1 hour for a tour of HMS Belfast. There are free worksheets for teachers and a free teachers pack.
KS1
HMS Belfast provides an interactive experience within this unqiue historic site. They are encouraged to dress up as sailors, climb into hammock. This provides hands on learning.
KS2
- This ties in very well with the national curriculum unit Britain since 1930 and combines well with the Britain at War Museum a few minutes away.
- A discover historic Southwark package can be booked with the Golden Hinde
- Illustrated talks — After a brief intoduction to the ship pupils are encouraged to explore the ship, try on uniforms and climb into a hammock. This will last for 30-45 mins
- Workshops — children are rotated between four work stations examining artefacts, uniforms, documents and other materials. These workshops last for an hour.
KS3
This is a useful source for pupils studying the Second World War as part of the history curriculum. This visit will help to develop a better understanding of the Merchant and Royal Navy’s vital role in the war.
- Illustrated talks — Using slides and original film footage. Students can get the opportunity to try on uniforms and handle artefacts. This session will last 30 –45 mins.
- The Korean War — This is available for those studying the Cold War, and a session can be booked with an HMS Belfast veteran from the Korean Commission 1950 — 1952.
KS4
- A visit to HMS Belfast can be very informative for students studying the Modern World Syllabus at GCSE and provides a perfect example of an original historic site for coursework assignments.

14-19 Education
A visit is particularly useful for those studying the modern world A level syllabus. Illustrated talks and educational sessions aew free of charge and can be tailor made to suit individual groups focus of study.
Kip in a ship
Children are able to sleep on board HMS Belfast for up to 3 nights. This can be a form of stimulating and affordable accommodation. Sleepovers are for groups up to 50 children and allows them to sleep in a real sailors bunk.
