Dulwich Picture Gallery
Dulwich Picture Gallery has an award winning Education Department which communicates the understanding and enjoyment of fine art. Teachers can also have a session in the gallery or a private view.
KS1
- ABC Art for Beginners Tour — informal tours are incorporated with discussions and drawing sessions. This takes place on a Tuesday and is for a class of 35.
- Storytelling — The resident storyteller brings the paintings to life. Unravelling the gallery’s unique history.
KS2
- Discovery sessions — a tour of the gallery encourages critical observation and language development and ends with a drawing session. Topics include, portraits, landscapes, animals by painting, costume, bible stories, myths and legends, colour, pattern and texture.
- Storytelling — The resident storyteller brings the paintings to life. Unravelling the gallery’s unique history.
- Building on the past — This tour explains why the building is so famous and talks about how buildings change over time.
- Art skills — Is a practical session introducing new art skills and techniques.
- Art Science — This practical session re-creates the paint making process process of the Old master studio.
- Explore Buildings — a chance to learn about the gallery buildings and local environment through tours of the building, drawing sessions and by using hands on 3D models and maps.
- Art days in school — Visits to the gallery can be followed up with a visit to the school by gallery artists and teachers who run workshops to dovetail with class projects.
Secondary pupils
- Tours and talks in the gallery — Gallery teachers use the permanent collection as inspiration for teaching a wide range of subjects. These include: An Introduction to Baroque art, Contextual study tour, Religion in Art, Architecture Tour, Temporary exhibitions.
- Practical sessions in Art skills, secondary art science and the art of building.
