Outdoors
Bermondsey is home to Southwark Park which boasts a boating lake, cafe, art gallery and sporting facilities. It has wide open spaces which are perfect for walking, playing games or just enjoying the scenery. Alternatively you can walk down the river path and perhaps stop in at the historic Angel Pub overlooking the Thames.
Southwark Park
Southwark Park first opened it's gate to the public in 1869 and was one of the earliest parks to be opened by the Metropolitan Board of Works. The design of the park is attributed to Alexander McKenzie and covers an area of 63 acres. In 1998 thanks to the Heritage Lottery Fund, many parts of the park were reformed to its former glory. A new bandstand and pavillion were built along with a new children's play area.
The parks many facilities include a cafe, boating lake and duck pond, rose garden, informal games area, bandstand, art gallery and children's playground. Among the many sporting facilities are tennis courts, football pitches, bowling green and athletics track.
Southwark Park also won the Green Flag Award in 2006. This scheme recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces in England and Wales.
